Category: Hair-supporting bioactive, Follicular stimulant
Used in: Haircare, scalp serums, shampoos, leave-on scalp treatments
INCI
Caffeine
Typical Usage Levels
- 0.1% – 0.3% in leave-on scalp serums and tonics
- 0.3% – 1% in rinse-off shampoos and scalp-cleansing formulations
Used at optimized concentrations to support follicular activity without compromising scalp tolerance.
What This Ingredient Does
Caffeine is a biologically active compound that has been extensively studied for its effects on human hair follicles. Research demonstrates that caffeine can penetrate the scalp barrier through hair follicles and reach the follicular root, where it influences cellular metabolism.
One of caffeine’s most researched roles in haircare is its ability to counteract the suppressive effects of androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT), on hair follicles. In in vitro studies using human hair follicles, caffeine has been shown to promote hair shaft elongation and support the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, even in androgen-sensitive follicles.
Caffeine also supports follicular energy metabolism by increasing cellular activity at the hair root. Additionally, it may enhance perifollicular microcirculation, helping support nutrient delivery to actively growing hair. These mechanisms make caffeine a valuable supportive ingredient in formulations targeting hair thinning, early-stage hair fall, and reduced hair density.
Benefits
- Helps reduce hair fall associated with androgen-sensitive follicles
- Supports the hair growth (anagen) phase
- Stimulates follicular metabolic activity
- Supports healthier-looking hair density with consistent use
- Complements other clinically studied hair growth actives
Who It’s Suitable For
- Individuals experiencing early-stage hair thinning
- Androgen-sensitive hair fall in men and women
- Weak, slow-growing, or reduced-density hair
- Scalp care routines focused on long-term hair growth support
It is frequently combined with peptides, amino acids, niacinamide, Redensyl®, AnaGain®, and botanical actives as part of multi-pathway hair growth serums.
Note by Dr. Su (M.D. Dermatologist)
Caffeine is one of the few non-drug actives shown to directly influence human hair follicles. When used consistently in leave-on scalp formulations, it supports follicular activity and complements long-term hair fall and density-support routines.
