INCI: Tartaric Acid
Category: Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) / pH Adjuster
Used in: Toners, serums, acid blends, peels
Typical Usage Level (Topical): 1–5% (primarily as a pH modifier and supporting AHA)
What This Ingredient Does
Tartaric acid is a naturally occurring AHA found in grapes and tamarind. In skincare formulations, its primary role is pH regulation it helps maintain the optimal acidic pH at which other AHAs (particularly glycolic acid) work most effectively. It has mild exfoliating activity of its own, but its most significant contribution is stabilising multi-acid formulas and improving the overall efficacy of the blend.
Key Benefits
- Stabilises pH in acid-based formulas, improving the effectiveness of other AHAs
- Contributes mild exfoliation in multi-acid systems
- Naturally derived from grape and tamarind sources
- Antioxidant activity from its polyphenol-rich plant origin
- Supports an even skin tone over time in blended formulas
Who It's Best For
- Anyone using multi-acid toners or peels (tartaric acid is usually present, whether you know it or not)
- Not typically selected as a standalone ingredient
Clinical Note by Dr. Su
Tartaric acid is more of a formulator's ingredient than a consumer-facing active. Its real value is making the AHAs around it work better by keeping the formula pH in the right range. If you see it listed, it's doing quiet but important work.
