INCI: Alpha-Arbutin
Category: Skin brightening active
Used in: Skincare
Typical Usage Level (Topical):
0.2% – 2% in leave-on formulations (serums, creams)
Concentrations up to 2% are commonly used for pigmentation concerns while maintaining good skin tolerance.
What This Ingredient Does
Alpha arbutin is a biosynthetic derivative of hydroquinone, designed to deliver brightening benefits with improved safety and stability. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme involved in melanin synthesis, which helps reduce excess pigment formation in the skin.
Unlike direct hydroquinone use, alpha arbutin releases hydroquinone very slowly and in minimal amounts, making it significantly gentler and safer for cosmetic use. This controlled mechanism allows it to improve hyperpigmentation without causing irritation or disrupting normal skin pigmentation when used as directed.
Alpha arbutin does not exfoliate or thin the skin, making it suitable for individuals who cannot tolerate stronger pigment-correcting actives.

Alpha arbutin is a reliable and gentle option for treating pigmentation concerns. Its strength lies in consistent use and proper sun protection rather than rapid or aggressive lightening.
