10 Self-Care Tips For Better Mental Health

All of us have been through times when we feel like we are in a slump. Even as we open up to our loved ones the best they can tell us is “it’s a phase, it’ll be alright”, and we wait for the phase to eventually fade away. But it isn’t as easy as it sounds. Sometimes it takes extra effort and energy to pull ourselves up and move on with life. Here are a few tips to keep your spirits high and consciously work towards a better self.

  1. Clean your space

Visual inputs can play a major role in how we feel. The influence is often not given its due value but being organized and feeling calmer starts with putting our physical environment into a well-organized pattern. Building a habit of clearing messes and putting things in order helps one stay organized and get easy access to things whenever necessary. Therefore, if you are currently going through emotional distress and feel like you are in a mess, look around you. Are there changes you want to make? Go ahead! Now is the time.

  1. Talk to someone you trust

A friend, a confidant, a colleague, a family member, or even an acquaintance you barely spend time with; find the courage to ask them if you can spend some time with them. It is always healthy to have open conversations with people you trust. You can tell them about your confusion and difficulties and seek help if necessary. It’s always great to have a second opinion when confused. This also helps with a sense of security. Venting your emotions to someone who respects your time is as important as being independent.

  1. Make yourself some wholesome meals

Breakfasts are a great way to get on track. Taking the time to have well-organized meals can have a huge impact on one’s lifestyle. Ensuring it is nutritious and well-balanced can help in one’s overall well-being. Everyone has comfort meals that make them feel good. It’s always great to treat yourself to your favorite meal.

  1. Practice positive self-talk

Always be your biggest cheerleader. Life throws us into different situations without warnings. What keeps us authentic is how we perceive each situation. No matter how hard life gets, make it a lesson to provide backup to yourself. Weigh the pros and cons of a situation, analyze how you could have reacted differently, and learn from it, but never bash yourself for being your authentic self. Experiences exist for us to become better.

  1. Write a gratitude list

Gratitude is an emotion that can help one’s emotional status improve a lot. Taking 5 mins to sit back and recollect all the life events you are grateful for can improve your mood a lot. One does not need very dramatic events to be grateful. It can be as simple as waking up in the morning, being able to enjoy the rain, being able to walk, talking, and smiling. It is all a blessing if we think about it.

  1. Wear something that makes you feel good

Feeling good starts with perceiving yourself as a unique person. No one is like you, no one can be like you and that is your superpower. Put on that dress you put aside because it was too glittery or too short or too colorful. If you like it, you wear it. Clothes are made to fit you, you aren’t made to fit them. Flaunt your style with no regrets!

  1. Go for a walk

A walk enjoying nature is a therapy all of us can benefit from. It opens our eyes to a whole new world. No matter how stressful life gets, a silent walk along the park or a beach will always fill us with peace. Take yourself off your sofa and get on a walk, now!

  1. Set boundaries

One of the biggest reasons we fail to keep our best attitude is when we feel disrespected. Realize that saying ‘NO’ is as powerful as being liked and appreciated by others. Encourage yourself to stay in situations where you are respected for your individuality. Putting yourself through uncomfortable situations where derogatory remarks are present will only worsen your peace of mind in the long run. So be mindful of your environment and guard your value.

  1. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep

A sufficient amount of sleep can keep us energetic throughout the day. Remember the times when you had to stay awake overnight to finish that project you kept delaying for long? Relax, all of us have been there. However, it isn’t good to get into a habit. 7-8 hours of sleep is important for an adult to function well. Even for teenagers, it is recommended to sleep for a sufficient number of hours to maintain their attention during studies.

  1. Keep yourself hydrated

Drink that water you have been skipping. Being dehydrated hinders your performance on so many levels. Your energy reduces, concentration is hindered, fatigue stays for longer and even your skin would seem dull. Add fruits to your diet. Treat yourself to 5-6 glasses of water, add slices of fruits to it and make them flavored, juices, smoothies, fruit bowls, and so many more. Hydration is the key to keeping your glow intact.

Summary:

No matter how hard life gets, know that there is always a way up. It is never too late to take a break and work on yourself. You are a lot more important than any other materialistic possession in your life. Ace it!
